On April 25, 2008 the California Public Utilities Commission approved a plan that will change the area code for Borrego SPrings, Ranchita, Warner Springs, Ocotillo Wells, Shelter Valley, Julian, Ramona, Valley Center, Pauma Valley, Pala, Palomar Mountain and other surrounding communities from 760 to 442.
This change will take place over a 15 month period. First, over a six-month period callers will be notified of the impending change. Then, for the next six-month period starting the end of September 2008, callers will be able to use either the 760 or 442 area code under what is called "permissive dialing." After the end of the permissive dialing (roughly twelve months from the time of the CPUC decision) the 760 area code will no longer work in these areas. For the first three months after 760 is no longer operative, callers will reach a recorded announcement informing them that they must dial the 442 area code.
