Borrego Springs Civic Foundation

Borrego Springs Civic Foundation

Since 1979 the borrego Springs Civic Foundation has served the community.

This year's officers are: Dora Murillo, president; Fran Schonefeld, co-vice president; Beverly Kuhrts, co-vice president; Sam Webb, treasurer; and, Kirsten O'Brien, secretary. The 14-member club meets between September-May the first Tuesday of the month, 5pm, at the Methodist church, and has an annual meeting in May.

The club's one and only fundraiser is a membership letter sent out to the community once a year. The Foundation does a community calendar from October-May which is mailed out to community members and maintains a community bulletin board.

On the first weekend in March it puts on a health fair at the mall. During the health fair, a blood drive is held through the San Diego Blood Bank. Anyone in Borrego Springs can draw from this blood bank. Cholesterol checks and free check-ups and information on domestic violence are also offered.

in November, the Foundation puts on Historic Preservation Day at the old Borrego Town site which is now owned by a private citizen who loans the location for the day. This is a day for people to learn about the town's history. Often, old timers tell stories and an historian is available to serve as a resource.

The foundation also supports special programs at the school and helps the high school Jazz Band and high school junior class. The class provides refreshments at Preservation Day and the Jazz Band plays during the day.

Some of the worthy causes that the foundation contributes to: Financial assistance to local service clubs providing food to the needy; donations to the school district for special programs and projects, including the junior class and Jazz Band, Presidential Classroom, and yearbook; provides Scholastic News to all students at the elementary and middle schools; contributes to Little League and youth basketball; contributes to the Youth and Senior Center, the Senior Nutrition Program and Education Center.

Call the Foundation at 760-767-3569 or write to: PO Box 1164, Borrego Springs, CA 92004.
